Boca Juniors vs Benfica match played on 16th June 2025

The world cup group stage kicked off with Argentine’s Boca Juniors and Portugal’s Benfica. The match ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw. Boca team started with a lot of pressure and determination to use the home advantage. The match was faced with a lot of unpredictability and this what world football fans relish. The emotions, and discipline breakdowns were part of the game and this resulted in 3 red cards and several yellow cards.

The Argentine’s team took the bull by the horn especially in the first half after securing two goals a head. The slow start of Benfica saw them enjoy the match so well and the they rode on the energy of home fans. This lead was short lived when Boca Juniors saw red card which was reviewed by VAR. This red card gave Benfica a fighting chance as DiMaria manage to covert the goal successfully. This match was full of drama as the player for Boca Juniors who had come out due to injury received red card for protesting against officials during VAR check.

The second half of the match saw both teams recalibrate themselves especially after Boca players remained down to 10 men. This would have been a perfect opportunity for Benfica to equalize but their slow start wasted them a lot. Benfica started enjoying possession and regained a bit of control on the match as they had an advantage of one more player against Boca Juniors. The emotions here were just volatile and anytime one could have seen another red card or yellow. The discipline among the players from both teams got the better of them and this made the match even more fun. Despite Boca having ten men on the field, Benfica were too slow to take the full advantage.

Boca juniors lost track of the match after receiving the red card and ere down to ten men. Their hope now was to see how they could defend their two goals as it was clear enough that they had no chance of scoring another goal. Benfica is a well composed team and the two goals conceded early in the game might have been due to small mistakes. As second half continued Benfica still had a good chance to equalize especially after Boca’s players were tired and could not keep the ball for long before being dispossessed.

Heartbreak came when Benfica’s player received a straight red card for high boot challenge. This diminished Benfica’s hopes to come back to the game and on the other side Boca juniors were now regaining their momentum. The match was now balanced ten men each. Few minutes later in the second half Boca Juniors received another red card. The nine men on the pitch could barely do nothing and this meant that it was now time for Benfica to salvage themselves though it was late in the game. They found their rhythm and momentum and finally towards the end of the match just before the final whistle, Benfica manage to equalize with the help of former River Plate’s player. The fans were just happy despite the draw as they celebrated every goal.
